Every child in Haverhill deserves a chance at the American Dream. Now more than ever, education is key to fulfilling the dream. Public education is our responsibility, our gift to the next generation. I support quality education for every child in Haverhill.
I am running for Haverhill School Committee for Ward 7. For the past seven years I have actively advocated for strong public schools in Haverhill. I have spoken out in public comments at school committee meetings, organized public forums on school issues with the Haverhill Education Coalition, served on the superintendent selection screening committee, written letters to the editor at WHAV, the Eagle Tribune, and the Boston Globe, met with two superintendents, other school administrators, the mayor, and attended many subcommittee and school building committee meetings.
The Haverhill School Committee could be much more effective in overseeing our schools. With hundreds of employees and a budget of more than $120 million, Haverhill Public Schools needs a “board of directors” representing multiple skills and perspectives. The committee should include some members with professional experience overseeing such large public budgets. With my background in public finance and public administration (overseeing billions of dollars in the Medicaid and Medicare programs) I would add needed financial management expertise to the committee.
If you have a minute, please see my blog post with my One-minute Message as recorded by HC Media.
With ward-based representation in Haverhill this year, a newly elected school committee has the opportunity to adopt more effective management practices to strengthen our schools. I hope you will join me in supporting more effective and strong public schools in Haverhill. I would very much appreciate your vote in the preliminary election September 12th and on election day November 7th, 2023.
Thank you,
Tom Grannemann, Haverhill, Massachusetts
